GODAI / 五大 / Panca-Dhatavah

As artist, when we created our home, we wanted to have a signature within that defined our space. Specifically, we wanted to make an earthen wall.

GODAI / 五大 / Panca-Dhatavah

We worked with an architect and a traditional Japanese craftsman to prepare and realize this vision. Although there was tension between the artistic expression and the craftsman approach, the final work embodies the successful potential of tradition fused with contemporary design.

GODAI is made from seven different earth clay bodies, some mixed with earths from our native lands, along with rice straw for texture and internal structure. The earthen wall creates a space for daily meditation and artistic perspective.

GODAI creates a living space, breathing in the moisture and expelling when the atmosphere needs it. Different than a painting that decorates the wall, GODAI helps create a stasis, both physically and mentally for those who live with it.
